Question: Can you use solar panel to run a 60watt television without battery storage?

(Posted by: Jerry on 2010-07-20 08:52:13)

I have a 60 watt television and a 100 watt inverter. Can I run my television with only the solar panel and power inverter? I am trying to avoid using a battery bank.

As long as you have enough sun light and the solar (photovoltaic) can put out enough wattage (voltage x amperage). Power is lost when the d.c. voltage from the photovoltaic is converted (inverted) to a.c. voltage. The true answer is measuring the average voltage and amperage put out over daylight compared to the inverter's power needs to power the t.v. power draw. 60 watts/ 120 volts = .5 amperage. (power's law and National Electrical Code Nominal voltage used for electrical calculations). Else ways it may work sparodically when there is peak sunlight hitting the panel at the right angle. Plus it with out a battery bank it will not work at night. The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, IL had a t.v. powered by a stationary bycycle powering a generator to run a t.v., if you pedaled fast enough. It may be a way to watch your t.v. at night and get exercise too.

Assuming your solar panels can produce however many watts you need, and there is enough sunlight available, you can run the entire house without a battery. The problem is this is rarely true in real life. Compared to the actual solar panel, the battery is cheap.

Most off-grid inverters need a battery. If it doesn't sense the right voltage, it will turn off. The voltage varies greatly coming out of a solar panel, it will not work connected straight to the inverter. You can get a small battery that is just used to buffer the voltage, it doesn't have to be big enough to store all of the power, just enough to provide a steady voltage for the inverter. If you use too much of the power, and the solar isn't keeping up with recharging it, the inverter will turn off.
