Get a large, flat box, or build one from wood or cardboard. Put that within another box with a few inches clearance around the sides, and pack the space between the boxes with insulation. Styrofoam packing peanuts would be ok, or loosely crumpled newspaper. It would be good to paint the inside of the inner box flat black. Then, you need a clear cover for the inner box. A large piece of acrylic (plexiglas) would be ideal. Regular glass would work, but be careful because the edges might be sharp, or it might break. You could even use saran wrap if you need to. The main idea is to cut down the air circulation. After doing this, you basically have a solar oven. Finally, get a roll of 1/ 4 " black vinyl tubing (the kind used in drip watering systems) from the hardware store. Run it into the box secure it in a coiled or serpentine pattern to expose it as much as possible to the sun. You can pour cool water into one end, and in good sun, the water should come out plenty hot. |
